Mushroom Advent Calendar!

Last weekend my partner suggested that we make an advent calendar. Immediately, I said we should make a mushroom themed advent calendar, which Maya thought was a good idea and we got right to work. It was a great distraction from my cold and I think whenever I look at the calendar, I'll always think of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as that's all we watched while doing the calendar. It's like the felt owl ornaments I made last winter, whenever I look at it - I think about Battlestar Galactica. Sigh. Good TV shows, where would we be without you?

We agreed that Maya would design most of the mushrooms and I'd pull them all together via sewing. To be honest, I was pretty surprised with how creative she got. She has a really good eye for colour and had such good ideas for different mushrooms. I think she has discovered a new calling. FELT MUSHROOM DESIGN!

The blanket stitching took a whole heck longer than I expected but as I kept at it, the faster I got so the last half went by way faster than the first half. It was also my first time doing embroidery as well. I have no idea if I embroidered the numbers the "right" way.

A few days after we got started, we went mushroom hunting and found a stick that we thought might work well with the calendar. Turns out that it was a perfect fit! Love it when things just work out like that. I debated about what to do with the back, I thought about adding a second layer of felt, to make it more sturdy, but I didn't have anything large enough, so I decided to use some fabric instead. I used to work at a quilt shop for a few years so I have piles of fabric still. I decided on a cute green polka dot fabric, I think it adds a nice little surprise for anyone who happens to peek. Can't wait to properly hang it up with the rest of our Christmas stuff. We will be housesitting (and catsitting) our friend's place for two weeks during Christmas so our set-up will be over there. For now it's hung up in our living room. Soon, I'll be busting out our elf stockings, eco felt Christmas lights and felt ornaments. Excited.
